Frequently Asked Questions

Based on our parent survey, our families appreciate the small class sizes, the ethics and values we reinforce as a Catholic school, the high standards of academic excellence and the sense of community at and about the school. SSCA reflects a caring environment where we understand the independent needs of each student. Our great teachers and diverse student body enrich our students’ learning experience.

SSCA follows the Responsive Classroom model, which focuses on student-centered classrooms, emphasizing the social and emotional development of the student, positive community, effective management, and developmentally responsive instruction.

Applications are rolling at Saint Saviour Catholic Academy, but the most popular time to apply is usually from the beginning of November. Once all application materials are on file, we usually set up interviews and/or Buddy Days for elementary and middle school students and Play Sessions for Pre-K and Kindergarten students. Yes. Financial aid is offered through the Diocese of Brooklyn’s Futures in Education. SSCA also offers in-house tuition assistance, but families still need to apply to Futures in Education first.

SSCA has early drop off beginning at 7:30 as well as an after school program. Within the after school program, we offer enrichment programs. After school begins at dismissal time and ends at 6:00 p.m. There is a separate fee for each of these programs.

Yes. We offer Spanish from grades 2-8.

There are Smart Boards or Promethean Boards in all of our classrooms from K-8. SSCA has a 1:1 chromebook program for students in grades 6-8. Additionally, students in middle school use the Google classroom platform for assignments.

Our school is located just down the block from Prospect Park. Our students are able to enjoy outdoor activities in the park on a regular basis (weather permitting). Outdoor activities include physical education, science exploration for younger grades, etc. There is also a private play space for early childhood students as well as the Open Streets Initiative option.

SSCA offers Regents classes for Earth Science and Algebra I to 8th grade students who meet the criteria. Our scholastic program also focuses on enhancing the writing skills of the students as well as how to engage in effective online research, a skill that has become increasingly important in the world of higher education.

SSCA uses an interdisciplinary approach to the teaching of STEM.

Our graduates attend a broad array of high schools, both private and public. They have gone on to attend Catholic high schools such as Regis, Xavier, Xaverian, Convent of the Sacred Heart, Dominican Academy, Notre Dame and St. Saviour High School; specialized public high schools such as Brooklyn Technical High School, La Guardia High School for the Performing Arts and the highly competitive Beacon High School; and competitive private high schools in New York City. Many of our students have obtained either full or partial scholarships for the Catholic and independent schools to which they were admitted.

At SSCA, our very vibrant Parent Association hosts events such as a Welcome Back to School Picnic, Fall Festival, Breakfast with Santa, Ice Skating Night, Roller Skating Night, Annual Auction, and more. We also engage in community outreach with activities such as Christmas caroling and food collection drives for food pantries in Park Slope and neighboring communities, among other activities. SSCA also works with other nonprofit organizations in and around Brooklyn.

Age Requirements

  • Nursery (3-year-old) students must be three years old by December 31
  • Pre-K students must be 4 years old by December 31
  • Kindergarten students must be 5 years old by December 31

School Tours / Buddy Days

  • Please refer to our online calendar for a listing of our tour dates.
  • Tours are by appointment and for adults only.
  • Students can visit our school on a Buddy Day.
  • Tours and Buddy Days can be scheduled through Michele, information above.

Student and Faculty Body
Approximately 275 students enrolled in Nursery through 8th Grade. 

  • While the majority of the student body hails from the local area, we do represent most zip codes in Brooklyn
  • Cultural, ethnic, religious, and economic diversity is welcomed and well-represented
  • Each year, graduates are accepted into prestigious Catholic, public, and private high schools

Additional Services (at an additional cost unless noted otherwise)

  • Free yellow school bus pick-up and drop-off or MetroCards provided by the Office of Pupil Transportation (OPT) for eligible students
  • Early Morning Drop-Off offered starting at 7:30 AM
  • After School offered from dismissal until 6 PM
  • Enrichment Classes after school. Past classes include Art in the Studio, Silly Science, Puppet Workshop, Yoga, Origami and World Drumming
  • Preparation Courses for the Test for Admission into Catholic High Schools

Curriculum Enrichment

  • Music: Band and Chorus (Grades 5-8)
  • First Lego League Robotics (Grades 7 & 8)

Financial Aid

  • Families who qualify and submit the necessary paperwork in a timely manner will be considered for financial aid, if eligible
