Letter from the Principal – November

Dear SSCA Families,

It is difficult to believe that Thanksgiving is upon us! The children have settled into their routines and the school year is off to a successful start. There have already been several events and programs that our school community has enjoyed.

We had a wonderful Fall Festival in October. Families enjoyed games, rides, crafts, baked goods, and a chili cook-off. We thank all of our volunteers for their time and commitment, without them this event would not have been possible. In early November we enjoyed Grandparents/Special Persons Day. Our students loved spending time with their cherished family members and friends and showing them their classrooms. Heritage Night, also in November, was an opportunity for our 7th Grade students to present projects about the cultural history of their families. This was a culmination of work that began over the summer.

Both Nursery classes have been developing their social and emotional skills by starting their day together in the gym and making new friends, which was very evident in the Friendsgiving they hosted last week. Pre-K has been taking community walks as part of their study of their local surroundings. They have also been observing the changes that come with the seasons. Kindergarten went on a field trip to Green Meadows Farm to learn about the season of autumn. They were also able to interact, observe, and learn about animals on a working farm.

Our students have also been actively participating in several exciting programs. In 1st Grade, students have been enjoying weekly trips to the Farmer’s Market in Bartel-Pritchard Square. They have been purchasing fruits and vegetables and learning about the concept of farm-to-table. Our 2nd Grade students continue to benefit and build confidence from the Swim for Life program at the Prospect Park YMCA. Dr. Annie Hauck-Lawson, a Saint Saviour Elementary School graduate, returns to our 3rd Grade with Brooklyn Mompost for her second year. Students are learning about their environment, composting, and the natural world around them.

In our upper grades, our 4th – 5th Grades are participating in Stages on the Sound. Students meet each week with two amazingly talented actors who have been guiding them in the artistry of creating. The culmination of the 4th Grade work will be presented in the form of a documentary and the 5th Grade will present movies. In music our 5th – 8th Grade students are composing original music with the Young Composers and Improvisers Workshop (YCIW). Look out for additional information on their concert in the Spring! Our 6th – 8th Grade Physical Education enrichment program with the Park Slope Armory YMCA offers our students a track and field/sports sampler. We are also happy to announce the return of Catholic Youth Organization (CYO) Basketball with a 6th Grade boys and 6th/7th Grade girls team. Our hope is to expand the program next year. Feel free to come cheer on our teams, their schedule can be found on our online calendar.

Looking ahead we have many great events coming up!

  • Breakfast with Santa is at 10:00 AM on Saturday, December 3rd in the Parish Hall. Thank you to those who have donated their time to the event and/or to the amazing raffle baskets.
